Best Overall Boys School Title for St Declans

[Sept 16th 2010] Today in the Clover Field, Ferrybank in front of a large crowd our school athletics team competed in the Waterford Primary Schools Cross Country races. We had boys competing in all age groups from 1st class to 6th running a variety of distances from 200m to 800m. Everyone did their best and at the end of the day we were awarded the trophy for the Best Overall Boys School. This is the first time in three years that we have won this award so well done to all the boys and to Mrs Brennan and Mr Doran who looked after the team today.

Athletics Team Win Silverware

[Apr 12th ‘11] 46 boys from 1st to 6th class competed in the RSC today in the Ferrybank AC Schools Track Competition. It was a beautiful day and many parents had turned up to support all the athletes. There was a mixture of short and longer races for all the various age groups. We had a number of individual winners and our relay teams also did very well. At the end of the day we were declared winner of the “Best Boys School” trophy. Our team captain Tadgh Brennan was formally presented the cup in front of the whole school the following day. Congratulations to the whole team for running so well on the day and special thanks to Mr A Brennan and Mr Doran for organizing the team for today’s event.

County Finals

[June 2nd ‘11] Qualifiers from the recent Ferrybank School Sports competed this evening in Dungarvan in the County Athletics Final for Primary Schools. Even though we had a small team travelling we came home with one individual gold and two relay team medals. Once again thanks to Mr Doran and Mrs A Brennan who looked after the team this year.

U13 Gaelic Football Campaign match by match ’10 – ‘11

Solid Performance by Senior Footballers

[Sept 16th 2010] Earlier today in Scoil Lorcáin our U13 Gaelic Football Team started their season also with a good win. It was a perfect day and we started the first half with the aid of a moderate breeze. It took us a while to get going but mid way through the half we began to show greater shape to our play. At half time we lead 2 – 3 to no score. The game was probably won and lost in the 10 minutes after the break as Scoil Lorcáin increased the pressure but our backs stood up strong. A few late scores completed the day’s work for us and everyone went home in good form. A good start for our boys but tougher tests lie ahead! Well done to Tadgh who was very consistent throughout the whole game and to Alex Casey who made a big impact when he came on as a sub.

Final Score: St Declans 4 – 6   Scoil Lorcáin  0 -1

Todays Panel: Tadgh Brennan, Cormac McCann, Conor Giles Doran, Ben Fitzgerald, Conor Hennessey, Alex Cavallari, Warren Sauvage, Tom Crotty, Chris Kong, Craig Ayers, David McGlynn, Sean O’Keeffe, David O’Hare, David Burke, Alex Kennedy, Peter Grogan, Alex Casey, Lee O’ Connor, Aidan Gannon.

St Declans Edge Close Encounter

[Sept 30th 2010] For the second time this week the College Field was the venue for an important 2nd round match, this time for our U13 Footballers. This match against St Stephens would decide who would top the group in the Waterford Primary Schools U13 Gaelic Football league, so both sides were anxious to do well. The rain may have started to fall at the throw in but that didn’t dampen the standard of this very entertaining game. A few early points settled our nerves and a great goal by David Burke put us 1-3 to a point ahead at the break. Following the restart St Stephens poured on the pressure and soon there was only a goal in it! Cormac popped over an important point to put us 4 ahead again. St Stephens efforts were finally rewarded with a late goal but fortunately for us we held on to win. Well done to both Alex Kennedy and Sean O Keefe who both played very well today. Semi finals next week!

Final Score: St Declans 1- 4  St Stephens 1-3

U13 Footballers Go Down Fighting

[Oct 7th  2010] This match concluded what was a miserable week for football in St Declans because despite our best efforts, our U13 Footballers too, were beaten at the semi final stage. Today’s match in the Waterford Primary Schools U13 Gaelic Football League was once again played in the College, this time against Ballygunner. There is no hiding that we were under pressure from the start and our backs were put to the pin of their collar to cope. However, even though we were 4 – 0 down at the break, everyone was ready to give it their all for the second twenty minutes. We worked and tried as hard as we could and fought bravely for every ball, and soon the score was 5 points to 2. All we needed was a goal. Once again we created the chances and came close on a number of occasions. In fairness the Ballygunner backs held strong and in the dying seconds they scored the final point of the day. We were very disappointed but we knew we had given our best. Every single player played his part today and it was great to see the pride they all showed in wearing the school jersey. Good luck to Ballygunner in the final. Thanks to Mr Doran and Mr Fitzgerald for looking after this team this year.

Final Score: St Declans  0-2  Ballygunner 0-6

Mini 7’s Gaelic Football campaign match by match ‘10 – ‘11

First Round Success for 7’s Football Team

[Nov 4th ‘10] Our school 7 a side Gaelic Football team competed in the first round blitz of this competition out in Ballgunner today. We played two matches in total, firstly against St Saviours NS and then Scoil Lorcáin. In our first game, two rather fortuitous early goals put us in a stronger position than we in fact deserved at half time, however in the second half we played much better team football and won well at the end. Scoil Lorcáin too, proved a difficult team to beat, however once again when we got on top we never looked like losing. Now we move into the next round of this competition next Thursday. Well done to everyone today and thanks to Mr Fitzgerald and to Mr Doran for looking after the team today.

7’s Team Show Courage to Win Eastern Title.

[Nov 16th ‘10] Our 7-a-side Gaelic Football Team captured the East Waterford Mini 7’s Football title today at Ballygunner GAA Grounds. We played three games in total against St. Stephen’s, Holycross and Rathgormack. In the first game we faced St. Stephen’s and after a hectic finish we hung on for a victory. In truth either team could have won this game.

St. Declan's 5-3 St. Stephen's 4-4.
Holycross, Tramore provided the opposition in the second game. This game was a cliffhanger from start to finish. Goal keeper David O’Hare and mid-fielder Chris Kong were outstanding in this game.
St. Declan's 3-7 Holycross 4-2
In our last game Rathgormack were our opponents. In this game we recorded a good victory.

St. Declan's 2-5 Rathgormack 0-0.

As we were undefeated on the day we were crowned champions. Team captain Chris Kong accepted the trophy on behalf of a set of players who gave a great performance and worked extremely hard throughout all three games. We now await the county final in the New Year.

Panel: David O'Hare, Conor Giles Doran, Chris Kong, David Burke, Lee O'Connor, Aidan Gannon, Peter Grogan, Sean O'Keeffe, David McGlynn, Alex Casey, Alex Kennedy.

No Joy in Dungarvan

[Apr 12th ‘11] Our long awaited final of the INTO Mini 7’s Gaelic Football Competition was played today in perfect conditions in Dungarvan against Tallow NS. There was a great sense of occasion about the day as all the various category finals were being played back to back. Our match turned out to be an extraordinary final and was a classic 7’s game in so many ways. We started brightly, but as the first half wore on we were unable to cope with this more accomplished Tallow side and ended up 7 points behind at half time. The highlight of the first half was undoubtedly the point blank save made by our keeper David McGlynn. Everything can change quickly in 7’s and so it did when Aidan Gannon knocked in 2 goals soon in to the second half. We were really on a roll then. However Tallow regained their composure and slowly got on top again and despite our best efforts right to the very last second we were unable to snatch a victory. Congratulations to Tallow. Well done to all our lads who once again gave it their all especially in the second half.

Final Score: St Declans 3 – 4    Tallow 2 - 9

Panel: David O'Hare, Conor Giles Doran, Chris Kong, David Burke, Lee O'Connor, Aidan Gannon, Peter Grogan, Sean O'Keeffe, David McGlynn, Alex Casey, Alex Kennedy.

Abbeyside took the lead early in the second half but we eventually clawed our way back into the game. The sides were again level with three minutes remaining but a very strong finish from the Abbeyside boys saw them run out winners on a scoreline that read Abbeyside 11 goals St. Declan’s 8 goals. U 13 Hurling Campaign ’10 – ‘11

U. 13 Hurling League

[Apr 5th ‘11] Our U.13 hurlers had a disappointing opening to the Waterford Primary Schools U13 Hurling League today. Portlaw were visitors to the College Field and we found it very difficult to cope with the much stronger and more physical Portlaw side. The game was very close and low scoring. We trailed by two points at the interval St. Declan’s 0-2 Portlaw 1-1.

We had a lot of the play in the second half, but the Portlaw defence held firm and we ended up loosing the game on a scoreline that read St. Declan’s 1-2 Portlaw 2-1.

We now face St. Stephen’s on Thursday in a “must win” game.

Disappointing Finish to Season

[Apr 12th ‘11] Our  U13 hurlers made their exit from this year’s Waterford Primary Schools U13 Hurling League following a very disappointing performance today. U11 Hurlers are Champions Again

[May 31st ‘11] Our U11 hurlers retained the Cumann na mBunscol Portlairge U11 Hurling League title this afternoon at Walsh Park. The game opened brightly for Mount Sion as they had a point in the first minute of the game. St. Declan’s then had a series of chances which we failed to take. Eventually in the fifteenth minute of the half a “65” struck by Aidan Gannon ended up in the Mt. Sion net. However there was a swift reply when two minutes later Mount Sion scored their first goal. A strong finish to the half saw a point from Lee O’Connor and goals from Colm Maher and Daniel Casey which left the half time score St. Declan’s 3-1 Mount Sion 1-1.

In the second we faced into the breeze and our half back line of Eamonn Brosnan, Aidan Gannon and Joshua Campus had to withstand tremendous pressure from the Mt. Sion forwards. A point from Aidan Gannon in the fifth minute was quickly followed by a second goal for Mt. Sion. A lot of hard work from midfielders Lee O’Connor and Cormac Power was rewarded when Kevin Hennessy struck an excellent ground shot to the net in the tenth minute. Cormac Power added a point on the fifteenth minute mark. And in the last minute of the half Kevin Hennessy scored his second goal to complete the scoring.

Tom Fitzgerald Chairman Cumann na mBunscol presented the trophy to team captain Lee O’Connor following a great performance from the “Declan’s” boys.

EA Sports 5 - a - Side National Soccer Competition - 2011

First Round Delight for 5 a side Soccer Team

[Nov 23rd ‘10] This morning in St Pauls Community College, our 5 a side indoor soccer team competed in the Futsall 4th class indoor soccer tournament first round blitz. They played very well on the day and have now progressed on to the next round. Ms Aylward and June De Courcey looked after this team today.

Futsal Eastern Final

[Feb 11th ‘11] This morning the boys from Ms Aylward’s 4th class went to the Kingfisher leisure centre to compete in the Eastern Final of the Futsal indoor 5 aside soccer tournament. This tournament is co-ordinated by the Waterford based FAI development coaches and is a fantastic opportunity for all of the soccer playing children in 3rd and 4th classes in schools throughout Waterford city and county and South Kilkenny to showcase their skills.

The 4th class boys who represented St. Declan’s N.S. were Lee O’Connor, Niall O’Keeffe, Cameron Power, Patrick Connolly, Seán Ryan, Liam Coad, Alex Power, Jeff Fanning, Adam Dalton and Luke Fanning. The squad had qualified for the eastern final in a league tournament played off before Christmas 2010.

There were five teams competing in the Eastern final comprising of St. Declan’s N.S., St. Beacons, Mullinavat, Newtown N.S., Slieverue and Portlaw. Each team had to play the other team and the top two teams would qualify for the County Final with two qualifiers from West Waterford.

St. Declans got off to a winning start with a scoreline of 3-0 against St. Beacon’s Mullinavat and this was a sign of things to come as the boys went on to cement further victories against Newtown (2-0), Slieverue (3-0) and Portlaw (3-0). The St. Declan’s goalkeeper Seán Ryan can be very proud of keeping a clean sheet throughout all of the games.

St. Declan’s N.S. have now qualified for the county final along with Newtown. This will take place in the Kingfisher on Friday February 18th. Ms Aylward and June De Courcey looked after this team today.

The Futsal County Final

[Feb 18th ‘11] This morning Miss Aylward’s 4th class boys returned to the Kingfisher leisure centre to contest the county final of the Futsal indoor 5 aside soccer tournament. This would be the third and final day of the competition. It was now down to the last 4 teams competing for the honours having started with a total of 49 teams at the outset of the tournament.

The St. Declan’s team would be pitted against Newtown, Tallow and Touraneena N.S. from West Waterford. However on the day Newtown failed to show up and therefore a three way league play off would determine the winners. St. Declans were drawn to play against Touraneena in the first game and another brilliant display of soccer saw St. Declans win their opening game 3-0.

Following a quick break St. Declan’s had to proceed with their next game against Tallow. Again the scoreline of 4-0 in favour of St. Declans reflected another superb team effort and copious amounts of skill.

It should be noted that not alone did the goalkeeper Seán Ryan keep a clean sheet during the final day but also throughout the whole tournament, which is a testament to him and his team for the brilliant defence work they displayed as much as their attacking skill which resulted in some wondrous goals.

Afterwards it was noted by one of the tournament organisers that this team was one of the finest teams that he had ever witnessed playing soccer together, and that they were destined for great things if they continued playing together.

Given that St. Declan’s had beaten the other two teams they were declared the Futsal soccer champions for 2010/2011. This is the third consecutive year that St. Declans has won this trophy and it is a source of enormous pride for the boys themselves, their parents who provided wonderful support to them, their mentor Miss Aylward, assistant June and of course St. Declan’s school itself.

The 4th class boys who represented St. Declan’s N.S. were Lee O’Connor, Niall O’Keeffe, Cameron Power, Adam Dalton, Adam Power, Patrick Connolly, Seán Ryan, Liam Coad, Alex Power, Jeff Fanning and Luke Fanning. Well done boys!
