Team Lift First Cup of the Year
[Sept 20th

competed today in the Ferrybank Primary Schools Cross Country Championships
held in the RSC. We had boys entered in all races from 1st to 6th
class ranging in distance from 200m to 800m. Once again this year everyone
tried their best and fortunately we had many individual winners. At the end
of the day we were awarded the trophy for “Best Boys School” ….much to the
delight of all the whole team. Thanks to Mr Doran and Mrs A Brennan for
looking after the team today. Well done lads!

[May 3rd 2011] Our school
athletics team travelled to the RSC today to
compete in the Ferrybank Primary Schools Track Competition. We had boys
competing in all races, sprint and long distance from 1st to 6th
class. Everybody gave of their best and competed very well. At the end of the
day both ourselves and Scoil Lorcain
were tied with equal points in the category of Best Overall Boys School and
therefore shared the trophy. This was once again a very well organised and
efficiently run event so well done to the organisers. Special thanks to Mr
Doran and Mrs A Brennan for looking after the team today. Congratulations to
everyone but in particular to Victory who won 3 gold medals!! Picture above

presented with the trophy.

Comfortable
Opening Victory for U13 Footballers
[Sept 15th
‘11] Our School U13 Gaelic
Football team opened their season with a comfortable home
victory against St Saviours in the Waterford Primary Schools U13 Gaelic
Football League today. St Saviours started off very brightly, however as time
went on we increasingly began to convert our possession into scores. Every
one played well today and the victory got the year off to a great start.

Senior Footballers Suffer Defeat
[Sept 22nd ‘11] This
afternoon our U13 Footballers played away to Ballygunner in our second round match in the Waterford
Primary Schools Football League. This was an excellent game of football where
from start to finish every ball was fiercely contested. We played with the
breeze in the first and led at half time by a goal. On the turn around Ballygunner were soon level and drove on to take a
commanding lead. Led by Peter Grogan, our lads fought bravely on and never
gave up, and with only minutes to go were rewarded with a well taken goal. In
the end it wasn’t enough and Ballygunner deserved
their victory.

U13 Footballers Reach Final
[Oct 13th ‘11] This afternoon, in summer like conditions we played
away to Scoil Lorcain in
the semifinal of the Waterford Primary Schools U13
Gaelic Football League. We went into this game as runners up from our side of the draw
against a Scoil Lorcain
team that to date were undefeated. The game itself was lively from the start
and very competitive, as both teams were eager to take command. Chances fell
to both sides but fortunately for us our keeper David O Hare was in top form
while at the other end our forwards took the scores to put us 1-4 to 0-0 at
half time. Despite us getting a few early scores in the second half, Scoil Lorcain suddenly
thundered into the game and were camped in front of
our goal for quite a while. A late goal by Lee O Connor however put the game
out of reach of our opponents and at the final whistle everyone was delighted
to have reached the final. Everyone played well today but Alex Casey, Peter
Grogan, Cormac Power and Luke Flynn stood out.

[Nov 15th ‘11] This
afternoon in Walsh Park our school U13 Gaelic Football
Team appeared
in the final of the Waterford Primary Schools U13 Gaelic Football League
against Holy Cross Tramore. Our lads had prepared
very well and today they were eager to bring the cup home to St Declans. This turned out to be a very tight game with the
score at half time only a point a piece. Holy Cross were
defending compactly and we found it very difficult to create clear scoring
chances. Within a minute though of the restart Holy Cross created a chance of their own and went a goal ahead. Our response though
was built on true Dt Declans
spirit and determination and in a four minute spell we scored 3 points,
before Cormac Power put us a goal ahead.
Alex Casey then got the score of the match put us clear by four. Holy
Cross now threw everything into attack and with only five minutes remaining
had narrowed the gap to point. With some last gasp defending by Jack and
Peter and a match winning save by David O Hare on goal, we held out for the
tightest of victories in a final these boys will never forget. Well done to
the whole team. A County Final now awaits.

County
Final Disappointment for Footballers
[Dec 1st
2011] This afternoon in a cold but dry Fraher
Field, in Dungarvan our U13 Gaelic Football
Team competed in the County Final of the Waterford
Primary Schools U13 Gaelic Football League against Abbeyside.
A lot of effort had been made by this team in training and their sights were
certainly on nothing else but a victory. We got off to a great start but unfortunately
sent two good shots wide of the post. However as the half wore on, Abbeyside began to grow into the match. Their size, pace,
strength and agility were all now beginning to tell and we were finding it
hard to get hold off and keep the ball. By half time we behind 1-1 to 3-3. We
rose our game considerably in the second half and everyone gave of their all
but despite our best efforts we were unable to contain Abbeyside’s
superiority and in the end we lost by 10points. David on goal was excellent today
as was Peter, Luke and Alex Kennedy.
Well done to Dylan Finn, who probably had his best game of the year
and to Matthew who had a fantastic second half. Thanks to Mr Doran and to Mr
Fitzgerald who looked after this team this year.

[Sept 21st ‘11] The U10 footballers continued on
their winning ways following a visit to St. John’s Park to play Scoil Lorcáin this afternoon.
The teams were evenly matched for the first half and we trailed by a single
point at half time. Our play improved during the second half and eventually
we got a grip of this game and in the end we recorded a good victory.

First Round Exit for 7 a Side Footballers
[Nov 9th ‘11] This afternoon in Ballygunner,
our 7 a side football team took part in the first round blitz of the Waterford Primary Schools 7 A Side Gaelic Football Competition. The other teams
involved today were Waterpark and Scoil Lorcain. In our opening game against Waterpark we ran out
comfortable winners and as Scoil Locain too had won their first game, our final game
against them would decide who would progress to the next round. Within 2
minutes Lee put us ahead with a great goal but slowly Scoil
Lorcain came into the game and edged into the lead.
Half way through the second half Colm scored an
opportunistic goal which meant we were now only a goal down. However, no
matter how hard we tried we were unable to bridge the gap and Scoil Lorcain were clear winners in the end. Final score 3-7 to 3-1. We
wish them the best of luck in the next round. Well done to our lads who gave
their all. Thanks to Mr Doran and Mr Fitzgerald who looked after the team today.

U 13 Hurling Campaign ’11 – ‘12
Senior Hurlers Make a Good Start
[Apr 26th ‘12] We
commenced our U. 13 campaign of the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol U. 13 Hurling League with a hard earned victory over a very determined Mount Sion side at De La Salle College today. Mt. Sion had the first score of the game when they put over
an early point. Two well taken goals from Luke Flynn and Kevin Hennessy gave
us a great start. We led at the break by four points St. Declan’s 2-1 Mt. Sion 0-3
Mt. Sion exerted severe pressure on our defence
in the second half and we were fortunate only to concede two points during
this period. We were clinging on to a two point lead heading into the last
ten minutes of the game. We then broke through for our third and decisive
goal from Ashley Oseni. A flurry of points followed
and we were somewhat flattered by the final scoreline
which read, St. Declan’s 3-5 Mt. Sion 0-5
Luke
Flynn had an excellent game throughout and he finished with a personal tally
of 1-7. Harry White had a very solid game on goals and was well supported by
Jack Troy and Daniel Casey in the full back line. Up front Luke Flynn, Kevin
Hennessy and Ashley Oseni caused many problems for
the Mt. Sion defence.

Back to Back Victories for U13 Hurlers
[May 4th ‘12] Today we played our second game in the U. 13 league against Ballygunner. This proved to be a
most competitive and skillful game from start to finish. We had to be at our
best to secure victory in this game! Peter Grogan gave an excellent
performance at centre back while full back Daniel
Casey was called upon time and time again to clear his lines. At mid field
Kevin Hennessy was very effective in this new position for him. Liam Coad
scored a fine goal when introduced as a substitute and Cormac Power caused
all sorts of problems for the Ballygunner defence.
Final score: St. Declan’s 3-9 Ballygunner 1-8

have now qualified for the semifinal and we will face Holycross,

Senior Hurlers Retain Eastern Title
[June 12th ‘12] Our U. 13 hurlers regained the Eastern title following a very good performance in the
final of the Waterford Primary Schools U13 Hurling League v Ballygunner at Walsh Park today. We opened brightly with
three early points, two from Luke Flynn and a “65” from Matthew O’Connor.
This lead was cancelled out in the tenth minute when Ballygunner
scored their first goal. Luke Flynn then went on a scoring spree and added
1-3. Lee O’Connor also got in on the scoring as he scored 1-1. A second “65”
from Matthew O’Connor left the half time score St. Declan’s 2-8 Ballygunner 1-1
The
second half proved to be an entirely different affair as Ballygunner
came right back into the game. Goals in the first and the eight minute of the
second half really put us under pressure. Luke Flynn replied with a pointed
free. Two more points from Ballygunner left a goal
between the sides with time running out. We were under severe pressure in the
dying minutes and defenders Dan Casey, Peter Grogan and Aidan Gannon were
called upon time and time again to clear their lines. The last score of the
game fell once again to Luke Flynn as a long range free in the last minute
ended up in the back of the Ballygunner net. Team
captain Luke Flynn accepted the trophy amid scenes of great celebration.

Declan’s 3-9 Ballygunner 3-3.

County Final Heartbreak
[June 21st ‘12] Our U. 13 hurlers played in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol,

hurling. We played against the gale force wind in the first half and we were
two goals behind at the interval, St. Declan’s 1-1 Abbeyside

the deficit to two points at one stage. However the physically stronger
western side added two late points to secure a three point victory. Harry
White played well on goal, defenders Peter Grogan, Dan Casey and Alex Kennedy
worked very hard. David Burke and Jack Troy were tireless at mid field. Upfront

match, the truth is that it was a game dominated by Tramore.

in fact finished the game quite well.

performance in this game and battled valiantly to the very end. We were ahead
by a point at the break St. Declan’s 1-1 Scoil Mhuire 0-3. A physically stronger Scoil
Mhuire team gained the upper hand in the second
half and ran out deserving winners by six points. It was disappointing to
come away empty handed on the day as this was our first appearance in this
particular county final, however all our players will have learned from this
experience. We now look forward to the U. 13 hurling League which will

[May 16th ‘12] Having
qualified from the local group stages over the last two weeks, our school 5 a side soccer
team {A} progressed on to the Munster stages of this
national competition for Primary Schools played in Tralee today. Despite the
very early start…6:30am!.... and the long bus
trip….4hrs!.... everyone was eager to do well and were looking forward to the
competition. Although overcast, conditions were perfect. We played St Anthonys {eventual overall winners} from Cork in our
first game and were comprehensively beaten 8 -1. We however were far from our
best and there was no doubt but that the long journey had impacted on us. Nenagh were next up and we were determined to give a
better account of ourselves in that game…and we did. We were far more
energetic and focused and played with a lot more urgency. Although we lost
4-3 in the end, we deserved a draw at least. As a result of our 2 defeats we
progressed no further in the completion.
Overall there were
some very good individual performance from Lee and Jason but most especially
from Dean on goal who made countless important saves. Thanks to Mr Morgan for
looking after the team and thanks also to parents for getting the lads up, and there on time so early this morning!
