Conquering my Fears

Hi my name is Michael Marley. I am 10 years old. We were going on a school trip up to Clara Lara Outdoor Activity Centre in Co. Wicklow. I wasn’t going to go on many of the amusements but something extraordinary happened to me that day. I was talking to my friends on the bus on the way up to Clara Lara. We were all talking about going on all the amusements. I told everyone that I couldn’t wait to get there but I was actually quite nervous because I am a quiet boy and wouldn’t be too assertive and wouldn’t really like to go on many of the rides. We seemed to take forever to finally finish the 1 hour and a half long journey. I was still worried about people laughing at me because I am scared of heights and of not going on most of the scary rides.

I got off the bus with my friends Joe, Lucy, Tom and Bob. The second I got out all I could hear was the word WOW over and over again…. it was like a stampede of elephants ..that’s how loud it was. We were going around the place all day long. I was going on all the rides that were not even in my age-group. My friends on the other hand were going on all the big and scary amusements they could find. All I was doing when they were going down the rides was cheering them on and saying well done when they were finished going on them. At the end of the day we came to this 1 slide!

It was huge and the building construction wasn’t finished yet but we could still go on it. I’m having a guess that everybody else went on it at least 5 times each. As usual I just stood there cheering as everybody else came down not even thinking about going down myself but then my friend Bob asked me a question. He asked me to go on the slide. I was surprised with his question because he knows that I do not like things like that. My answer was easy. I told him that I wouldn’t like to go on it. His replied OK and just kept going on the slide as I was thinking about going on it myself. I thought to myself why not go on the slide I have nothing to lose. So I told everyone that I was going to go down the slide. I waited in line for about 20 minutes which was a bad thing because it gave me time to think about how scary it might be. Finally it was my turn and the man gave me a boogie board and I sat down at the top of the slide. My friend Tom was at the slide attached to it (they were both the same slide). Everybody at the bottom of the slide shouted 3, ….2, …..1 …..GO. My friend Tom went but I stayed at the top. Thoughts were running through my head about ….should I go or shouldn’t I go. All my friends down at the bottom of the slide were counting on me and shouted that I could do it. I thought to myself that I wouldn’t just be letting them down  …I would be letting myself down. I smiled down at everyone and in a quick instant I was speeding down the slide. When it stopped all I could hear was cheering. I got up and out of the pool and everybody came rushing towards me to congratulate me. I told my friends that I couldn’t believe that I had just done that. They answered that they knew I could!

On the bus on the way home everyone was still congratulating me on my fantastic performance. I waved goodbye to my friends as they shouted as loud as they could WELL DONE! I went in to my house with a sad face on me and my parents asked me what was wrong. I just told them that I went on the biggest slide in Clara Lara. They were thrilled for me. I told them the whole story and we celebrated me conquering my fear of heights. What seemed as though a normal day for everybody else in my 5th class was an extraordinary day for me.
