Story of the Month – Sept ‘06

Climbing Mount Everest   ….. by Ben Jacob.

Hello my name is Ben I’m going to tell you the story of when I climbed Mount Everest.

It was a few years ago when a group of friends and I decided to climb Mount Everest. I brought along my friends Jimmy, Mick, Mike and John. Our real journey began when we got to base camp at 17.900 feet. We started by climbing over huge lumps of ice. It took a while because Mike got his foot stuck in a crack. When we got Mike’s foot out we moved on to some bottomless chasms. I wanted to get a closer look so I bent over to look and suddenly Mike pushed me! I was falling to what I thought was going to be my death when something hairy grabbed me! I looked up and saw a person covered in white hair but before I got a proper look at him he flung me over the other side of the chasm into a fierce snow storm. I struggled my way out of the storm. When I got past the storm I pitched camp for the night.

In the morning I woke up and peeked outside of my tent and in the distance saw three little figures. I quickly got dressed and ran outside of my tent to find that the three little figures turned out to be Jimmy, Mick and John. They told me that when I fell into the chasm they thought I was dead and that Mike slipped and fell to his death! Then I explained that Mike actually pushed me into the chasm but something big hairy and white saved my life. We all put our worries behind us and ventured on.

We didn’t have much longer to climb but we were still very tired. We were almost there when Mick slipped and fell down the mountain! I told John to go and see if Mick was alright so John went down to see if Mick was alright and Jimmy and I took the last few steps to the top of the world and stuck the Irish flag in the snow. Then John shouted up to me that Mick was dead! Then his shout caused an avalanche. John ran out of the way but Mick’s body got covered in snow. Jimmy and I ran down to see if John was alright. He said his leg hurt a little but other than that he was fine. He also said that there was no way we could get Mick’s body. We decided to go home. We went down the mountain, through the snow storm, over the chasms, over the lumps of ice and back to base camp. When we got back to Ireland we told Mick and Mike’s family what happened to them. We always pray for them.

So that’s the story of how Jimmy and I climbed Mt. Everest. The funny thing is that Jimmy is my dog!
