Our Visit to Waterford
Crystal –
Jan 25th ‘08
Please wait for the pictures to load……
On the January 25th
my class and I went to Waterford Crystal.
We left at 10.30
a.m. We hopped on the bus, got our seats and went to Waterford
Crystal. The
bus dropped us off at the visitors centre. As we entered we saw a full size
harp made of glass and an eight foot version of the clock tower. We thought
we were going on the tour but we realized we were fifteen minutes early so we
went into the gallery to pass the time.
I didn't realize how
many trophies they made. They made the Cricket World Cup trophy in 1992. They
also make the Snookers Masters trophy annually. There were about 25 trophies
in the gallery and nearly all of them were important ones. On the way out I
saw a fabulous piece of craftsmanship, it was a horse and carriage and worth
over €22,000. I was very surprised at the price of crystal. We didn't
think we were in the gallery that long but it had been fifteen minutes, which
meant it was time for our tour.
We went on a bus
which brought us around the factory. Our first destination was the blowing
area .They blow down through long tubes to make the shapes and sizes of the
glass. I looked like a tough job.
We then went to
the cutting area. The men there have to cut the glass. They first must make
sure they cut deep enough into the glass and secondly they must make sure
that they don't cut through the glass. It is a skill not easily mastered.
The third place we
went to was the engraving department. As we entered we saw the horse and
carriage that I had seen earlier. Our tour guide told us it had taken three
months to make. We entered the room and we saw the engravers engraving words
and names into the glass. You would need exceptional hand-eye co-ordination
for this job.
We had good fun on
the bus home talking about our brilliant tour of Waterford
Crystal.
