Chinese New Year – Jan 26th ‘09

On Monday 26th January Chinese people all around the world celebrated the Chinese New Year. Each year is named after one of 12 animals and 2009 is the “Year of the Ox”. 1st, 2nd, and Mr. Grant’s 3rd class learned about a folktale which explained how the years were named. They found it interesting to hear how the animals battled it out to see who would have the first year named in its honour! The boys also discovered why the Rat and the Cat are such dreadful enemies…. ..definitely treachery on the part of the Rat! The customs and traditions associated with the Chinese New Year (visiting family, getting haircuts, lighting lanterns, and having fireworks) led to interesting comparisons with how we celebrate Christmas and the New Year here in Ireland.

Happy Chinese New Year to all our Chinese friends.
