1.
[Sept
1st ‘08] This date is always a special one in the
school calendar. This year is extra special however as it not only marks the
beginning of school for all the boys in Mrs
Costello’s and Miss
McKeon’s but also the first day of our new Principal Mr Kevin
Doran.
2.
[Sept
5th ‘08]There
was an incredible buzz of excitement around the whole school today as we
celebrated Déise Day in advance of Waterford’s first appearance in 45 years in the
All Ireland
Senior Hurling Final next Sunday against Kilkenny. Come on the Déise.
3.
[Oct
8th ‘08] This
morning in St Johns
Church 2nd,
5th and 6th Classes represented the school at a special
Parish Mass celebrating the beginning of a new
school year for all the schools in the parish.
4.
[Oct
23rd ‘08] The
Mayor of Waterford Jack Walsh visited our
school today to present certificates of attendance to all the boys who had
not missed one single school day last year. Well done boys.
5.
[Oct
23rd ‘08] The
School Halloween Raffle was held today. A packed hall was full
of excitement in anticipation of the draw being made. This can often be a day
of “devilment” too and Mr Doran had to speak to a number of
teachers about their behaviour on the stage. This was a hugely successful
draw and €3400 was raised. A sincere thanks to all boys, parents and
teachers for once again supporting the school so generously.

[Nov
7th ‘08] Today
we celebrated Red and White Day in
support of the De La Salle Senior Hurling Team’s appearance in this
Years Senior Hurling County Final.

[Nov
10th ‘08] The
victorious and historic De La Salle
Senior Hurling Team visited St Declans this morning as Waterford Senior
Hurling County
Champions for 2008.
8.
[Dec
1st 08] The
newly crowned Munster Club Champions, De La Salle visited our school today and showed off
the latest cup to their collection.
9.
[Dec
23rd ‘08] The
Christmas Carol Service on the day of the holidays is now
becoming a traditional opportunity for the whole school to come together and
focus on the story of the first Christmas and the real meaning of this
festive season. Well done to Mr Hughes for organizing this years event.
10.
[Feb 12th ‘09] Well
done to our Junior Quiz Team
who tonight were clear winners in the local Credit Union Quiz. The team was
Colm Stockdale, Eamon Ganly, Craig Brennan Power and Darragh O Rourke. Our
senior teams performed very well also tonight and came very close to the top

[Mar 9th – 13th
‘09] To celebrate Maths Week noticeboards and free wall space
throughout the school was used to demonstrate, explain and enliven the world
of maths for everyone. Well done to Mrs White who worked very hard on this
project.

[Mar 16th ‘09] Today
the school was awash with red and white in support of the De La Salle Senior
Hurling Team’s appearance in the All
Ireland Club Hurling Final in Croke
Park on St Patricks
Day.
13.
[Mar 20th ‘09] Today we called “Grand Slam
Friday” as we held our annual charity
no uniform day supporting the Irish Rugby Team who will be chasing
history tomorrow in Cardiff
in their challenge to win their first Grand Slam in 61 years. Just under
€1000 for cancer research was raised on the day. Well done lads.

[Mar 28th ‘09] There
was a real sense of community today in St Johns
Church as our 6th class
boys made their Confirmation along with the boys and girls of
Waterpark, Newtown and Christchurch schools. In his homily Bishop Lee said that the Holy
Spirit would now be at the side of all these young men and women as they made
their journey through life. Well done to Mr Fitzgerald, Mrs A Brennan and to
Mr Corbett for all their work in making today such a success.
15.
[Mar 31st ‘09] During
the season of Lent we supported the Bothar appeal to send a goat to Africa. In total we raised
€1400. This means that we can now send 4 goats to Africa
with Bothar and we are also delighted to be able to give €200 to
Trocaire. Great praise must go to Mr Grant for leading this effort over the
last number of weeks and to everyone who supported this worthy cause.
16.
[Apr 1st ‘09] Some
of the runners involved in this years Harmony
Run around the coastline of Ireland visited St Declans today.
This unique group of people come from all over the world and take on this
athletic challenge while spreading their message of friendship, harmony and
peace.
17.
[Apr 2nd ‘09] This years “Cake and Bottle Sale” was another huge success. There was a great turnout on
the night and there were lots of prizes to be won on the Spinner. A sincere
thank you to everyone who supported this fundraising effort. Your generosity
is much appreciated and all money raised will go to continually improving
resources used in the school. Also special thanks to the Staff and Parents
Association without whose help this event would not have run so smoothly.
€4000 was raised.
18.
[May 16th ‘09] Congratulations
to the boys in second class who along with five pupils from Newtown Junior
School this morning received their First Holy
Communion in St John’s
Church.
This is always an important date in the school calendar and there was a real
air of celebration inside the church despite the poor weather conditions
outside. Special thanks to Ms Walsh and Miss O Mahony for all their work
throughout the year to make this day both memorable and meaningful.
19.
[May 25th ‘09] Today
we had our “GAA Day” to celebrate the 125th
anniversary of Ireland’s
largest sporting organisation. There were blitzes and quizzes and even a
special question and answer session with our special guest All Star hurler
Michael Walsh. Special thanks to DLS hurling club and Mr Fitzgerald for all
his help in preparing today’s events.

[May 27th ‘09] Tonight
was 4th
class drama evening as both Mr
Hughes’s and Ms Aylward’s
classes were live on stage as they presented their plays to their parents.
Earlier in the day they gave dress rehearsals to many of the classes in the
school. Many thanks to Liam Meagher who was the inspiration behind these
performances.
21.
[June 12th ‘09] The
school went blue and white crazy today in
support of Waterford as they play against
Limerick on Sunday in the Munster
Hurling Semi Final.
22.
[June 12th ‘09] Also
today we presented our Penmanship Awards to
boys who presented their work with care throughout the year and showed good
penmanship ability. Special thanks to Mrs White who looked after the
organisation of this event.
23.
[June 18th ‘09] As part of a GAA initiative called
“Back to Your Roots”, two
of Waterford’s well known
hurlers John Mullane and Kevin Moran visited our school today for a special
“Question and Answer” session with 4th classes.
24.
[June 25th ‘09] This years School Rounders League for every boy
from 3rd to 6th was run off this week in perfect
conditions. Congratulations to all the winners. Thanks to Mr Fitzgerald and
to Mr Kirby for organising the teams and to all the teachers who refereed
games during the week.
25.
[June 29th ‘09] There
was a fond farewell today from the whole school to Mrs Costello on her retirement from
teaching. We wish her many years of good health and happiness.
